If students fail to become proficient readers, it tends to have negative side effects on their emotional development. The Standards were written to emphasize correlations and connections within mathematics. There is a rich history of human development of mathematics and mathematical uses in our modern society. PS like all federal “guidelines” once in place they become mandatory. A strong equity perspective assumes that teachers and schools alone cannot achieve equity; rather, it requires educators working with policymakers and others in larger social movements to challenge the intersecting systems of inequality in schools and society that produce and reproduce inequity.
