Thanks to the development of tools from Lie theory, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and topology, classical problems are investigated more systematically. Let us explain a little, what we mean by naturality. In the aftermath of this crisis, Platonism had to be recast. These were the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries by Lobachevsky, Bolyai and Gauss and of the formulation of symmetry as the central consideration in the Erlangen Programme of Felix Klein (which generalized the Euclidean and non Euclidean geometries). It is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, having arisen in response to such practical problems as those found in surveying, and its name is derived from Greek words meaning “Earth measurement.” Eventually it was realized that geometry need not be limited to the study of flat surfaces (plane geometry) and rigid three-dimensional objects (solid geometry) but that even the most abstract thoughts and images might be represented and developed in geometric terms.

Abramo Hefez, to receive a Special Visiting Researcher scholarship, given by the Brazilian government, for study at Northeastern University. These are the closest analogues to the "ordinary" plane and space considered in Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. I've taken through multivariable calc, linear algebra, and ODE's. Combinatorial topology will do your head in. My interests revolve around low dimensional topology, more specifically symplectic and contact structures in dimensions 4 and 3.
